The way of the Keirin

A fascinating documentary on Keirin from Nowness by Jonathan de Villiers. It shows how it has its own culture in Japan which extends far beyond just being a bike race.

Keirin: Speed Racers on Nowness.com.

These sort of documentaries always seem to work better when the person making them goes in cold and without much preconception.

What’s striking is how much more visceral it seems than the version that the UCI touts to cycling fans. Barring occasional incidents like Awang’s splinter, the European version seems to have lost something in translation.
